If you are planning to come to Nagambie for a stay well here is a road trip with a difference all within an hour and a half. There is nothing we love more than exploring our region, the diversity and quirkiness is difficult to get past!

This is one of our road trips we’d recommend for those who like to get themselves into places which are just that little bit hidden and different. Where your mates say to you, where was that photo taken – that looks awesome.

This trip heads directly north from Nagambie stopping in Shepparton on the way through to Strathmerton and then back down through Dookie before hitting the highway.

OK so there is plenty to see and do in Shepparton, it is a short 35 minute drive up the highway, for this trip though we recommend you head off around 9.00am towards The Last Straw Cafe in Keppel Street for a mid-stop coffee and snack. Now, seriously as you head there you’ll be thinking what the….is there really a restaurant here in this seemingly industrial part of Shepparton? The answer yes. These guys are pretty cool, located in a passive straw designed building. Great coffee. Recommended.

Next you head north out of Shepparton to Tocumwal towards Strathmerton where you will find Cactus Country. This is a seriously unique experience in Australia with more than 4000 species of cacti and succulents. Presented in a very cool eight garden trails. Bring the camera! Its open 7 days a week 9am – 5pm, truly awesome stuff. The kids will LOVE this place.

Hop in the car for a 50 minute drive south east towards Tallis Wines. You will die for this view. Sit back and overlook the gorgeous rolling hills of Dookie while you enjoy a simple café menu including regional platters, dips and homemade sausage rolls. After your lunch take a stroll to get even more breathtaking views with interpretive signage raising awareness of the Yorta Yorta, the traditional owners of the land.

After your walk hit the road back to Nagambie.

To summarise it looks a little like this:

  • 9.00am I drive: 40mins I Nagambie to Last Straw Café, Shepparton I Coffee Break
  • 10.30am I drive: 45mins I Shepparton to Cactus Country, Strathmerton I Touring
  • 12.30pm I drive: 50mins I Strathmerton to Tallis Wines, Dookie I Lunch
  • 3.00pm I drive: 1 hour I Dookie to Nagambie

Tips:

A great day out for young and old with just enough stops along the way.

  1. Thanks for the info. We do not live in Victoria and appreciate not spending too much time searching for new short day treks when visiting Nagambie. The views at Tallis look picturesque.
